Common HVAC Problems and When to Call a Pro

Learn about common HVAC issues and simple troubleshooting steps before calling a professional technician.

Before calling for service, there are a few things you can check yourself. Here are the most common HVAC issues and simple troubleshooting steps.

System Won't Turn On

Check your thermostat batteries, circuit breaker, and the disconnect switch near your outdoor unit before calling for service.

Weak Airflow

Start by checking and replacing your air filter — dirty filters are the number one cause of reduced airflow and poor performance. Check that all supply vents are open and unobstructed.

Frozen Evaporator Coil

If you see ice on your indoor unit, turn the system off and let it thaw. This is usually caused by restricted airflow or low refrigerant — both require professional diagnosis.

When to Call a Pro

If basic troubleshooting doesn't resolve the issue, or you notice refrigerant leaks, electrical burning smells, or unusual noises, call a qualified HVAC professional immediately.
